As charging is the bread and butter of your devices, there are various myths that get circulated in regard to charging. This is particularly true of iPhones as one of the most popular and expensive smartphones on the market. Although some claims have some substance to back them up, others just aren’t true. Despite this, any former or current iPhone user has certainly been reprimanded for charging their phone “the wrong way”. With this being said, is there a wrong way of charging your phone? Listed below are the top five myths about iPhone charging and chargers.
You Never Need to Turn Your iPhone Off
Can you remember the last time you charged your iPhone? If the answer is no, your phone might not be in the best position it could be. Though it’s not the worst thing in the world to rarely turn your phone off, this is anything but beneficial to your battery’s health. Apple Geniuses will tell you that turning off your phone occasionally will help maintain your battery life. This is something you might want to consider if you’ve noticed a considerable decline in your phone’s battery life.
You Can’t Use an iPad Charger on an iPhone
Although this is a myth that’s in circulation, the opposite of such is in fact true. Say you’re charging an iPhone 6, well, a 12-watt iPad charger will charge your iPhone twice as quickly as the charger that comes with an iPhone. Therefore, if you’re in a bit of a hurry, you might consider reaching for the iPad charger, as opposed to your phone charger.
You Shouldn’t Charge Your iPhone Overnight
Most smartphone users charge their phones overnight so that they wake up to a fully charged device; however, there are rumours circulating that state that overcharging your phone ultimately kills the battery. Despite this, this is far from true, as charging your phone overnight does zero damage to your phone. In fact, once your phone is fully charged, it stops taking in energy from the power source. Therefore, your phone can remain plugged in without receiving a charge.
Don’t Use Your Phone While Charging
This particular myth stemmed from an instance in which an iPhone user’s device exploded while they were using it and it was charging. So long as you use a reliable charger, this needn’t be a concern, as this particular user was using a knockoff charger. As a result, the phone was damaged and, ultimately, overheated and exploded. Despite this, charging your phone and using it at the same time is in no way dangerous, when using reliable equipment.
Using a Non-Apple Charger is Dangerous
While it’s true that using cheap knockoff chargers can be dangerous, this doesn’t necessarily mean that your charging products have to be exclusively apple. As long as you purchase a charger from a trusted company, and the product is labeled for use with iPhone/iPad, then there’s no reason why these products should present any danger. Cheap products tend to be risky, as their reduced price comes from the lack of internal safety mechanisms. It’s these products that are responsible for spontaneous combustions and explosions. On the contrary, you will pay more for Apple-branded products solely for the name and the label. This, however, doesn’t make the product more reliable than one made by an alternative trusted brand.
Cable Maintenance isn’t Important
It’s also worth noting that even Apple products can pose a fire hazard if the cables are frayed or damaged. Therefore, cable maintenance is incredibly important. Not only could you avoid a fire, but you could extend your phone’s lifespan.
