The last few years have shown a drastic growth and development of AI globally. In Ukraine, this sector has also been deeply studied and implemented to help people gain proper IT education and facilitate many processes, including the military segment. However, many discussions about its threats are still the topic of the day. Sergey Tokarev, IT entrepreneur and investor, co-founder and partner of the technology company Roosh, commented on the key aspects highlighted in the Web Summit this year.
Everyone was looking forward to seeing a product like AI, but nobody expected to see its rapid growth and penetration into human lives. Today, the world is struggling to adapt to its tempos.
“I have been working in the tech industry for over 20 years, and I must admit that I didn’t anticipate such a rapid development of AI technologies. Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally changing the world we live in, from the operational processes of individual companies to the overall state of society. The largest number of panels at this year’s Web Summit was dedicated to AI,” said Tokarev.
According to Sergey Tokarev, along with positive points, AI development has brought various issues to discuss. Among them are ownership rights, the creation of deep fakes, the ethicality of AI decisions, legal accountability, etc. People are also worried about being displaced by AI.
“According to investment company Goldman Sachs estimates, up to 300 million jobs worldwide could be automated by technology. Elon Musk has already called for a halt to the development of certain technologies, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that Artificial Intelligence could lead to the end of human civilization,” added the Roosh cofounder.
Sergey Tokarev notes that discussions around AI gathered top officials from 28 countries and representatives of leading AI companies in the world’s largest conference AI Safety Summit. It was dedicated to regulating the field of Artificial Intelligence and took place in November this year. Such a contribution seems to help control AI development, but the investor thinks differently.
“Firstly, all discussions regarding the field of artificial intelligence take place between government representatives and AI giants. This means they can dictate their own terms and strengthen their positions in the market. This complicates the environment for small startups and slows down the overall development of technologies……Secondly, the current debates about AI are focused on highly unlikely scenarios. Can AI revolt against humanity? Will there be the end of civilization due to artificial intelligence? If it does happen (which I doubt), it won’t be anytime soon,” commented Tokarev.
The investor believes that people cannot predict all the challenges the AI industry might bring in the future. However, they should address problems as they appear.
“I believe that in this field, applying precedent law is the best approach. A problem emerges—we examine it—a decision is being made—and a precedent is set,” explained an IT entrepreneur.
Today, Ukraine is one of the leading countries in Eastern Europe regarding AI implementation in the corporate sector.
